Promoting Reading in Every Season!
We believe in promoting reading at every opportunity is important, and there are so many different ways to do so! Don’t overthink it! Today’s 12 Days of Christmas Freebie is a set of December themed bookmarks, and to go along with the bookmarks, we’d like to share some of our favorite (and simple!) ways to promote reading in any classroom!
Simple Ways to Promote Reading:
- Have fun bookmarks at the ready for all of your students.
- Give quick (but captivating) book talks on a regular basis.
- I like Book Talk Tuesdays! Choose a book or two and read aloud the first few pages or give an intriguing overview of the book. You can also find and show book trailers online like these from Scholastic.
- Always have an ongoing read aloud!
- Read to your students simply for pleasure. While it is important to teach our students to be analytical readers, it is equally important for us to teach and model reading for enjoyment.
- Provide opportunities for students to read purely for enjoyment. No standard or learning target attached!
- On students’ birthdays, allow them to choose a story from Storyline Online for the class to watch.
- Have a seasonal book display in your room to rotate high interests books during any given season.
- Fill your classroom with all levels and types of books and allow students access to them! It is better to lose a few books along the way than to lose a reader for life. They need fingertip access!
- Involve your students in book report alternatives such as creating a book trailer, designing a new cover and summary, illustrating a favorite scene, writing an extra end chapter, etc.
- Really get to know your students and their interests so you can provide good fit recommendations.
- Be a reader yourself! In order to make great recommendations for your students, you need to be well versed in children’s literature yourself! Let your students know what you are currently reading, and let them see you reading, too!
